You may experience occasional unexpected output in 4th Dimension, such as incorrect label printing or ignored font changes. If you are getting unexpected results, save your file, quit 4th Dimension and restart your computer.
The DeskWriter C printer driver may also request a color print cartridge when printing a black and white document. If this happens, click OK to continue to use the black ink cartridge.

Adobe Illustrator does not support color printing on color QuickDraw printers, such as the DeskWriter C printer.
PHOTOSHOP 1.0, 1.07, 2.0
In the PhotoShop Print dialog box is a checkbox that says “Correct for printing colors.” This is intended to provide the same functionality as the “Complex Color Printing” checkbox in the Page Setup Colors dialog box. If you check both boxes, both the application and the printer driver try to match printed colors to screen colors. The result is undesirable output. Check only one of the boxes (preferably the “Complex Color Printing” checkbox), not both.
When printing a black and white document, the printer driver may request you to insert the color print cartridge. Ignore the request and click OK to print with the black print cartridge.
ADOBE TYPE MANAGER (ATM)
When printing with Type 1 PostScript® fonts and ATM, you may get the message: “A screen (bitmap) version of the font is being sent to the printer since no printer font is available.” This means that the printer driver cannot find an HP printer outline font for the PostScript font that you are printing with. You may ignore the message: ATM will scale the fonts correctly and the fonts will print out in high resolution.
To suppress this message, turn off the “Use HP Fonts” checkbox in the Page Setup Options dialog box.

The DeskWriter C printer does not support PostScript features. This has the following effect when using FreeHand 2.02:
• Zoom effect: only the text is printed.
• Fill effect: the fill pattern is printed, but the fill area is printed with an incomplete pattern.
• Stretched, skewed, or rotated text: printed characters may appear jagged.
• Fill and Stroke effect: the fill pattern is printed, but not the stroke effect. You can achieve the desired results by using "outline font" in place of the Fill and Stroke effect.
The above problems have been fixed with FreeHand version 3.0. However, if you print text along a path, using the "Join Elements" command, the text will be clipped.
FREEHAND 3.0
FreeHand’s Heavy effect does not produce accurate results. Instead, use true Bold to create bold fonts.
When using the Fixed 8 Colors setting in the Page Setup Colors dialog, documents are printed in black when printing from the black and white Macs (Plus, SE, SE/30, Classic, Portable, PowerBook 100) and from the Mac II.
There are several incompatibilities between FreeHand 3.0 and the DeskWriter C driver:
Borders between the edge of the page and the image on the screen may not match the borders when printed.
• Cancelled print jobs appear as partial print jobs in the HP PrintMonitor queue.
• You cannot print pages smaller than letter size on letter size paper.
• When using Preview on large tiled documents, the toggle between the different view sizes does not work correctly.
Images are clipped if you set the Page Setup scaling size below 75%. Scale images within FreeHand instead of using Page Setup to reduce the page.
PAGEMAKER®
The DeskWriter C printer driver settings for Page Setup override the Page Setup settings in PageMaker. However, PageMaker's Page Setup settings determine how the image will appear on the screen. To see how the PageMaker document will appear when printed, use the DeskWriter C printer driver's Preview screen.
To get the best results from printing PageMaker fill patterns, turn on Precision Bitmaps in the Page Setup Options dialog box.
PERSUASION 2.0
If a drawing object within the document crosses over page boundaries, then only the first page of that document will be printed and the other data will be lost. You can solve this problem by adjusting the object with the Scaled or Move function so that it fits within the page boundaries.
When you turn Fractional Widths ON, you will see a closer match of text and graphics alignment; your printout will appear closer to what you have on the screen. However, by turning Fractional Widths ON, you automatically turn Font Substitution OFF.
In Preview mode, patterns and gradations of patterns will appear more simplified than in the actual printout.
SUPERPAINT (formerly from Silicon Beach Software)
Use version 3.0 for best results. Earlier versions of SuperPaint have compatibility problems with the DeskWriter C printer.
When printing, always have the object or draw layer (the compass icon) in the foreground. If you do not, SuperPaint may crash during the print job.

If you use Apple's 8•24 GC graphics card, you may experience undesirable output when printing with the DeskWriter C printer. For example, unexpected lines may appear. You can prevent these problems by turning off the 8•24 Accelerator feature. From the Control Panel, click the icon that depicts a rocket inside a red circle with a slash.
FINDER (under System 6.0.x)
The default Finder partition size on your Macintosh is 160 Kb. This may be too small to print in color under MultiFinder. You may receive one of the following error messages:
“There is not enough memory to print (-108).”
or
“The directory could not be printed (out of Finder memory). Check that a printer file is in the System Folder and that a printer is selected in the Chooser.” (In this message, “printer file” refers to the printer driver.)
If you receive one of the above messages, change the Finder's partition size to 400 Kb by following these steps:
1. Open the System Folder.
2. Click once on the Finder icon.
3. From the File menu, choose “Get Info.”
4. At the bottom of the Info dialog box, click the cursor in
the Application Memory Size box and change the number to 400.
5. Close the Info dialog box.
6. Restart your computer.
SYSTEM 7
Virtual Memory and 32-bit addressing
If you have used the System 7 Tune-Up application released by Apple, both virtual memory and 32-bit addressing will work well.
If you have not used the System 7 Tune-Up, and if you want to use either 32-bit addressing or virtual memory, you must turn both options ON. One will not work without the other when using the DW-C 2.0 printer driver. Use the Memory Control Panel to turn these options on.
If the After Dark screen saver activates while the printer is printing, printing may stop. If you touch the mouse or keyboard, After Dark "checks out" and printing resumes. You can prevent this situation by accessing After Dark's control panel, and clicking the "WHEN" button. Then select the "System IQ Activity Monitor." This allows After Dark to monitor the computer and not activate the screen saver if the computer is busy (i.e., printing in the background).

Previous versions of FileMaker II or FileMaker Pro, resulted in a “Not enough memory to print” message when attempting to print large documents. Claris has updated FileMaker Pro (beginning with version 1.0v2) to give more memory to the DeskWriter and DeskWriter C printer drivers.

HYPERCARD 2.0
HyperCard 2.0 is not fully compatible with the DeskWriter C printer and problems can occur when printing, including a system crash. These problems are fixed in the HyperCard 2.1 release.
MACDRAW II 1.1
Mixed black and color patterns often do not print as you expect. In order to print color, check “Print Color Patterns” under the Print Options menu.
You cannot use font substitution with MacDraw II.
Rotated shadow and outline text does not print properly.
MACPAINT
Use version 2.0. Version 1.5 of MacPaint does not work with the DeskWriter C printer.

If you try to print an image whose boundaries extend beyond the logical page boundaries, then only the first page of the image will print. Subsequent pages will be blank. Try reducing the image so that it fits onto one page before printing.

Version 3.0 works well with the DeskWriter C driver. You MUST disable or remove SuperLaserSpool 2.02 and earlier versions in order to use the DeskWriter C printer.

Excel does not automatically copy color data into the Clipboard, either text or graphics. When you create a chart that has color data, and then copy that data to the Clipboard, the Clipboard will copy the text and graphics in black. If you want to copy the image from the Clipboard in color, you must first select the "Print Using Color" option in the Print dialog box. Then click "Preview" or "OK." The "Print Using Color" option is saved and the data can now be copied to, and pasted from, the Clipboard in color.
Excel also prints the wrong color when the monitor is set to “millions” of colors. Set the monitor back to 256 colors and print.
POWERPOINT 2.0
Microsoft PowerPoint 2 does not allow font substitution (this is true for any printer).
The settings in the Page Setup dialog box are defaulted not only for the current document, but will remain for subsequent documents that you load, until you change the settings again.
PowerPoint 2 needs more memory than the 800K automatically allocated. Try allocating an additional 300K under the Get Info menu item. See also “Memory Requirements” under Solutions to Common Problems.
When printing in Fixed 8 Color mode, the background color is converted to white. Do not use white text since it will not print.
WORD 4.0
Be sure to turn Fractional Widths ON in the Page Setup dialog box. This will help to ensure print quality and prevent gaps in underlining.

If you use Now Utilities’ StartUp Manager and background printing, you may not be automatically turning on HP Background Startup. If background printing is not on, go to StartUp Manager. Click on Scan. Click on Sort. Be sure that HP Background StartUp is checked.

In general, do not make any changes to the default settings in the Print dialog box. Doing so may cause a system crash. For example, attempting to print a specified range of pages (i.e. from page 3 to page 10) causes a system crash.
If you attempt to print a black text character that has a black shadow, the printer driver will ask you to change to the color print cartridge. It interprets the shadow as a gray scale image to be printed in a shade of grey. The shadow will also print with jagged edges. You can solve this problem by selecting the "Color Off" mode to have the shadow printed in black.
To be sure that font substitution is ON, look at the Integral menu item under Preferences in the Edit menu (you cannot be sure by looking at Fractional Widths).
